Ruptured Disc - What Is It?
Ruptured disc is a condition in which one of the intervertebral discs that cushion vertebrae splits, with the thick outer layer allowing the jelly-like inner layer to leak into the spinal canal. In many cases, this condition causes no symptoms because the inner layer does not put pressure on the spinal cord or any nearby nerve roots. However, if it does impinge upon one of these structures, a ruptured disc can result in a number of symptoms, including:
- Numbness
- Tingling
- Muscle weakness
- Muscle spasms
- Pain
Depending on the location of the ruptured disc, the symptoms will present themselves in different areas of the body. For example, a ruptured disc in the cervical spine will result in symptoms experienced in the neck, upper back, and arms. A herniated disc in the lumbar spine, however, will result in symptoms in the lower back, buttocks, legs, and feet.
Ruptured Disc Causes
A ruptured disc can be caused by a variety of factors or even a combination of several, including:
- Age-related degeneration
- Repetitive sports injuries
- General wear and tear
- Physical trauma, as from a car accident
- Repeated lifting of heavy objects with improper posture
- A sudden twisting movement
