Herniated Disc Diagnosis
When you're suffering from symptoms due to a herniated disc, obtaining an accurate diagnosis is of the utmost importance. Your treatment will depend on the specifics of your condition, and understanding exactly what is causing the symptoms will help your doctor create the most efficient treatment plan.
Herniated disc diagnosis generally includes three steps:
- The doctor will look over your medical history and check for conditions that may be related to your herniated disc. Oftentimes, the condition can be related to another issue you had earlier in life such as a sports injury. Bring your medical history with you or have it sent to the doctor's office to ensure your healthcare provider has all the information they need to make an accurate diagnosis.
- You will undergo a physical examination, during which the doctor will likely look at your muscle strength, flexibility, and ask if certain movements or positions cause you pain. Keep track of your symptoms for a week or more prior to your appointment and write down what activities cause discomfort, what symptom you experienced, and the location in which you felt it. Bring this with you to your meeting. This can help your doctor narrow down the location of the herniated disc to a certain part of the back.
- Once the physician has performed a physical examination, he or she will often recommend diagnostic testing to further determine the location of the disc as well as confirm any initial findings. An MRI or CT scan is often recommended so the doctor can see the location of the issue and get an understanding of it in greater detail.
