Herniated Disc Surgery
Herniated disc surgery is a treatment for ruptured discs that is reserved for only the most severe cases. Surgical treatment is usually only recommended for patients who have been suffering from the condition for an extended period of time and those who have symptoms that significantly impact their quality of life.
Minimally Invasive Herniated Disc Surgery
An alternative to open back and neck procedures, minimally invasive or endoscopic herniated disc surgery offers relief from symptoms without many of the detriments. Some of the advantages of minimally invasive procedures include:
- Recovery time – Endoscopic procedures have a significantly shorter recovery time than open back and neck surgeries; just a few weeks as opposed to up to six months or more for open surgeries.
- Incision size –The incision required for endoscopic procedures is just a few centimeters long. Open surgeries require incisions of several inches.
- Risk of infection – Due to the smaller incision and the fact that minimally invasive herniated disc surgery is performed on an outpatient basis, it comes with a significantly lower risk of infection.
- Scarring – The smaller incision and reduced trauma to muscle and bone of endoscopic procedures translates to a much less external and internal scarring.
- Hospital stay versus outpatient procedure – Minimally invasive spine surgery is an outpatient procedure and does not require a hospital stay like open back and neck surgeries do.
